The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002. The prime focus of the course to impart the required skills and knowledge to the students. It is offered along with Chemistry, Botany and Zoology in three combinations, BtZ,BtB and BtC.This course will introduce you to the challenging aspects of genetic processes recurring in nature, which led to the birth and growth of Biotechnology and its allied areas of specialization: Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology,Recombinant DNA Technology, Microbial Technology, Gene Cloning, Cell biology, Environment Biotechnology, Animal and Plant Biotechnology. Providing financial and laboratory assistance to the students to carry out small scale research projects.

The Department has been constantly involved in diverse kinds of activities like

  1. UGC sponsored CO.P in plant tissue culture Certificate course (2009).
  2. V.G.S.T. SPICE project by the students (2010 & 2011) Rs. 30,000+30,000.
  3. U.G.C. sponsored one day state level conference on frontiers in Biotechnology (2014).
  4. Department received U.G.C. minor research project (2014) Rs.2.00,000/-grant
  5. Department sanctioned with major V.G.S.T. project (2015) under C.I.S.E.E. with Rs. 10,00,000/-grant.
  6. One day state level conference on "Emerging Trends in Bio Sciences & Industry" on 20th Feb. 2016.
  7. Two days Workshop on Forensic Science is providing add-on Knowledge to the Students (2016). Seminar on optimizing home chemotherapy through analytical Techniques (2016).
  8. Department entered in to an MoU with Aristogene Bioscience Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, Abhivrud Multispeciality clinic and Diagnostics Bangalore, Scientific lab & Industrial Research Center Bangalore, EduBioskills. Pvt Ltd., Shridhar Bhat's Laboratory, Bangalore for conducting student projects, Training & Workshop Programme and certificate courses.
  9. Student Achievement: Miss. Ashwini D. III year B.Sc. CZBt combination secured 7th rank at Bangalore University-2018 examination
  10. Workshop on Basic Techniques in Molcular Biology was organized in ssociation with Kshitij-fest (IIT Kharagpur Event-2018).
  11. Seminar on "Women in Science"- In solidarity With March For Science Across The World, was Organized by KLE College Rajajinagar, Bangalore in association with Breakthrough Science Society Bangalore (2019).
  12. Swachhata Pledge under Swacchata Pakwada Programme by MHRD, Govt of India., Pledge document was read by students and faculty on 16th January 2020.
  13. General Health Camp for Students, faculty and menial staff was arranged by Final Year Students in Department of College on 15th February 2020. Association with Health Fermented Foods Fest (Fermented Food Expo for developing entrepreneurship skills) was conducted by final students of biotechnology on 15th February 2020. Science Exhibition involving Preparation and exhibition of Science Models (Static and Working) was for PU and UG on 15th February 2020 Students (2020).

Celebrating Biodiversity. In view of World Environment Day, International Level Poster Competition on theme (SCP, SCO, Bioprocessed foods, benefits of super food over junk food, impact of super food over ill effects of malnutrition). Virtual -Lecture workshops on Mushroom Cultivation & Yoga for College students, On account of International Day of Yoga.

SOPs Followed in  Biotechnology   Laboratories:

The purpose of the SOP  to ensure a safe work environment by documenting the key risks associated with an activity and how the risks can be controlled. The ultimate purpose of an SOP is to ensure operations are performed safely and in the correct manner.SOP is to provide standard operating procedures for handling of chemicals and apparatus/equippements in the laboratory. This is in addition to the routine precautions that are followed while WORKING in a Biotechnology lab. A separate SOP is available for handling of  each instruments.

Department of Biotechnology Laboratory Standard Operating Instructions to Students:

1. Keep your laboratory bench clean

2. If a live culture is spilled ,cover the area with a disinfectant for 15 minutes and then clean it

3. Inthe event of injuries such as cut or burn ,inform your instructor immediately for necessary help

4. Be careful of burners /spirit lamps and turn them off when not in use

5. The waste materials shoud be disposed in dust bin.

6. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after finishing work in the laboratory

7. Broth cultures must never be pippetted with mouth

8. Aseptic technique must be rigorously observed at all times

9. Label all the plates ,tubes culture properly before starting an experiment

10. Materials such as stain and reagent bottles ,petridishes, pipettes must be returned to their original location after use

11. Fungal or bacterial culture Contaminated test tubes / culture bottles must be discarded after Sterilization through Autoclave only. (then discarded to the bin)Avoid throwing into the bin without sterilization

12. Working bench must be kept free from unnecessary apparatus, filter paper, chemicals, waste.

13. For better use of any instrument read SoP. ie.Before using any instrument understand the standard operating procedure

14. Always clean microscope stage, eyepiece,lenses and objectives before and after use.All lenses must be wiped with the lens paper

15.Record the data in ball point and make sketches/drawing and labels in pencil only

16. Keep the journal /Record book up to date.

17.  Wash your hands with disinfectant soap when you arrive at the lab and again before you leave. 18. Absolutely no food, drinks, chewing gum, or smoking is allowed in the laboratory. Do not put anything in your mouth such as pencils, pens, labels, or fingers.

18. “Entry-Exit Procedure for Microbiology & Biotechnology” Lab should be strictly followed.

 RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT:

All students entering a Biotechnology  lab are required to:

1.Adhere to the policies of the college.
2. Follow the instructions of the teachers during the Lab.
3. Always wash up after using chemicals.
4. Use safety goggles, lab coat while performing any experiment.
5. In case of any accident/incident (however big or small), inform the teacher immediately.
6. Be aware of all emergency procedures.
7. Do not perform any experiment/reaction without the permission of the teacher.
8. Do not taste any chemical from the laboratory bottles even though they may seem to be common/harmless such as salt/glucose etc. during Cell biology expts/Genetics expts /microbiology expts /Biochemistry expts /Molecular Biology expts /Environment Biotechnology expts /Industrial Biotechnology expts /Plant Biotechnology experiments

 RESPONSIBILITIES OF TEACHERS:

All teachers are required to make sure that:

1.The students have read the SOP and understood them which is displayed with each instruments in the laboratory .
2. The teachers themselves must be aware of the safe handling of each chemical being used in the laboratory.
3. The Teachers/students do not violate the safety norms of the ;laboratory
4. Report any safety violation by any staff/student to the TIC (Technical Integrity Check )of the department or to head of the department or to the Head of the Institution
5. Report any major laboratory accident to the TIC immediately and provide medical aid to the injured as soon as possible.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF LABORATORY STAFF:

All members of the laboratory staff /Laboratory attainders are required to:

1. Make sure that the work allotted to them is complete and the lab is in proper order.

2. Be responsible for the general safety of the students and all your colleagues.

3. Be alert and Attentive during laboratory experriments

4. Handle chemicals/ kits/apparatous safely.

5.Understand the meaning of the symbol on the bottle of chemical name

6. Understand the nature of each chemical used in laboratory and store them accordingly.

7. Store chemicals properly so as to not result in dangerous reactions/explosions/fire etc.

8. Store all hazardous chemicals separately

9. Act swiftly and help the victim in case of any accident.

10. Monitor the way students/colleagues handle the chemicals and take necessary/suitable

Action on violation of safety norms:

1.Clean up chemical spill immediately taking due care of that particular bench

2. Evacuate the students to safety in case of emergency.

3. Remove any Sulphuric Acid spills immediately.

4. Do not touch any chemical with bare hands; always use a spatula or a dropper.

5. Do not to waste any liquid /Solid chemicals.

6. Wherever possible, use the left-over solutions for another class.

Do’s and Don’ts in the Biotechnology Laboratory

1.Do not store food in the laboratory refrigerator. It is for chemicals only.

2. Do not keep your bags on the working bench. Keep them at the designated places only.

3.Do not eat or drink in the laboratory.

4.Do not keep your mobile phone near you while working in thelaboratory.

5. Do not run in the laboratory.

6.Do not bring visitors in the laboratory without the concern head of the department

7. Do not wear flowing dresses in laboratory. Keep your dupatta/ scarf in your bag.Please tie your hair properly while working in Biotechnology and Microbiology laboratory.

8.Wear proper lab coat while in the laboratory ,Carry observation  note book to record practical outcomes /sketches. Carry Practical record book .Carry pencil to draw diagram

9. Do not leave hair open while working in laboratory. Tie it up


10. Do not throw a burning match stick, media and other things in the sink or in the dustbin.

11. Do not throw used microbiology media/plant tissue culture media directly to the bin .Consult teacher for proper disposal because used must be sterilized and then disposed.

12.Do not inhale or taste chemicals.

13.Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with your skin or clothing.

14.Avoid and Be aware of Routes of exposure to chemicals through Inhalation/Ingestion/Absorption

15.Symptoms of possible overexposure like :Eye discomfort, Breathing difficulty, Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Skin irritation. If any symptoms you feel bring to the notice of lab in charge teacher immediately so that we can provide FIRST-AID On immediate exposure.

16.If the victim is feeling weak and suffocating, move her to fresh air.
Seek medical attention. Following are some first – aid measures for specific purposes.

17.If in case chemicals :First Aid for Chemicals in the Eyes

  1. Don’t rub the eyes.
  2. Hold eyelids open and flush with water for 15 minutes.
  3. Be careful not to contaminate the other eye.•
  4. Seek additional medical attention.

18.First Aid for Chemicals on the Skin:

• Flush area with lukewarm water for 15 minutes.

• Remove clothing and jewellery from the burn area.

• Seek additional medical attention

19.First Aid for Chemical Inhalation

• Move victim to fresh air.

• Get immediate medical attention.

20.First Aid for Chemical Ingestion:Do not induce vomiting unless told by Poison Control.Get immediate medical attention.

  1. Before starting your job & after completion, wash & sanitize your hands with Antiseptic solution.
  2. Where ever required ,Always use proper gowning, face mask, head caps & clean gloves while working in Lab.
  3. Do not enter in the area in case of any cut / wound on the body.Do not enter in the area in case of ill health condition.Avoid coughing, sneezing and yawning in the testing area.Do not wear dirty Aprons or Uniforms in Lab.
  4.  The basic safety rules for working with chemicals in the lab apply to biotechnology experiments as well. Wear chemical splash goggles whenever working with chemicals, heat or glassware in the lab. Avoid contact of all chemicals with eyes and skin and wear chemical-resistant gloves and apron as needed.
